“The angel of mercy” was created as an elixir for not only the persisting war in the Ukraine, the terrible situation for women in Iran and the recent earthquakes in Turkey in Syria. The Secretary bird is a powerful symbol in the work, the bird whose legs – depicted as the spear and knobkierie – serve it well in its hunt for snakes symbolising protection of the nation against its enemies. The gold leaf in her halo was applied by hand on the final printed image.
