Louis Nel
Artist Biography
Louis was born and grew up in Cape Town since his 1973 and then moved to Pretoria in 1985. He matriculated at Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool, Pretoria in 1991 and then proceeded to study Fine Arts At the University of Pretoria for 2 years. He travelled in Europe for a year, then worked as a desktop publishing artist for 2 years. When he moved back to Cape town in 1996 he worked in the film industry until 2003 as a scenic painter and props person and only then started painting professionally. He currently lives in Gordons Bay.
His work focuses on seascapes and landscapes. He prefers the term ‘mindscape’ because he uses the environment as a vehicle for his expressionist work. Looking at these scenes, in many of us, it serves as a wonderful sense of detachment from everyday life and its problems, suggesting a more reflective and spiritual awareness and space.
